By the end of 2025, an estimated 80% of global consumers will consider sustainability in retail an essential factor when making purchasing decisions. Major retailers like Patagonia and IKEA have already redefined their business models to prioritise eco-conscious practices in their supply chains and other business operations. For growing retailers, the shift to sustainability can feel complex as they balance the need to control costs with the pressure to meet environmental and ethical expectations.

Retail supply chains are responsible for 25% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, highlighting the urgent need for retailers to integrate sustainable practices into their operations. According to Deloitte’s CxO Sustainability Report, 65% of companies are using more sustainable materials while 50% of the companies are already developing new climate-friendly products or services. To remain competitive, retailers must focus on becoming more sustainable by integrating cost-effective green initiatives and scalable eco-friendly practices.

Sustainability as a Competitive Advantage

By building eco-friendly supply chains and prioritising local sourcing, retailers can minimise emissions and waste, cut transportation costs and boost their brand reputation. Embracing the circular economy through resale platforms, repair and returns services helps retailers extend product lifecycles, create new revenue streams and strengthen customer loyalty.

Additionally, smart technologies like automated lighting and temperature controls also enable many retailers to optimise energy use, lower operational costs and meet the growing demand for sustainable solutions. These practices help retailers differentiate their brand by being future-proof, positioning them as market leaders while fostering stronger connections with environmentally-conscious shoppers.

Brands like The RealReal and Patagonia are leading the way in integrating resale into their business models, demonstrating that sustainability and profitability can thrive together. Discover their winning strategies in our latest eBook and how you can apply them to your brand.

Overcoming Barriers to Sustainability in Retail

While sustainability is a priority for growing retailers, implementing eco-friendly practices can be extremely challenging. From supply chain transparency to cost concerns, overcoming these barriers requires the right strategies and support. Here’s how retailers can tackle them:

  • Transparent Supply Chains: Ensuring sustainability across the supply chain can be challenging. The solution lies in building transparency. Retailers can adopt supply chain management systems for end-to-end visibility, enabling retailers to track materials, monitor emissions and ensure eco-friendly compliance.
  • Government Grants: Sustainable materials and technologies often require higher initial investment but can save on long-term operational costs. Retailers can explore government grants or tax incentives designed to support green initiatives, such as the Growth Accelerator Fund for small businesses, which helps businesses scale with financial support, and UK SMART grants, which fund innovative projects focused on sustainability and technology.
  • Consistent Implementation: Scaling sustainability across teams and locations requires staff training and collaboration. Retailers can also partner with sustainability-focused organisations to streamline processes and maintain accountability.

Investing in a Greener Future

The journey towards sustainability in retail requires a commitment to eco-friendly supply chains, circular economies, energy-efficient technologies and ethical sourcing. While challenges like complex logistics and higher upfront costs exist, they can be tackled with transparency, innovation and collaboration. By adopting these practices, retailers not only reduce their environmental impact but also position themselves as leaders in an increasingly eco-conscious market.
